古布を再生し新しい命を吹き込む「南部裂織」

南部裂織は江戸時代に着古した着物や布を再生する機織りの一技法として生み出された織物である。当時は、寒冷な気候のために綿の栽培は難しく、北前船で運ばれた木綿や古手木綿はとても貴重な存在であった。そのため、厳しい生活を強いられた農村地方の女性たちが布を大切にするための知恵から生まれたものである。
細く裂いた布を横糸に、木綿糸を縦糸にして地機で織った裂織は丈夫で暖かく、そのカラフルな色移りと複雑な機上げが特徴である。
主としてこたつ掛けや帯などに用いられてきたが、現在ではテーブルカバーをはじめ現代感覚の手織物にも応用されている。

“Nambu Weaving” - breathing new life into old cloth

Nambu Weaving evolved from the need to reuse worn clothing and cloth during the Edo period (1603-1867). At that time, growing cotton in a cold climate was difficult, so the cotton cloth and shopworn cotton brought by the ‘Kitamaebune’ (ships used for marine transportation in the northern districts) was precious. Therefore, this kind of weaving is a product of the knowledge of women in farming regions forced to live harsh lives.
The cloth was ripped into smaller pieces, and the cotton was stitched into it vertically, eventually producing a stronger and warm fabric, characterized by its colorful patterns and complicated loom.Although once mainly used as ‘kotatsu’ (heated table) coverings or ‘obi’ (kimono sash), they are currently used as table covers, or other goods with a modern feel.
