青森県の伝統工芸品（錦石）

磨きぬかれた光沢が美しい津軽石「錦石」

「陸奥の錦石」として名高い青森の錦石は、碧玉、めのう、玉髄などの石英に各種金属イオンが混入したことにより、複雑で格調のある色彩が交錯したものである。錦石は津軽半島周辺などで採取される天然石で、磨くと光沢とともに美しい色彩や紋様が現れる。
錦石は古くからその美しさが人々に愛されつづけ、縄文時代には「勾玉」に加工されたり、室町時代には「舎利石」として尊ばれ、遠く唐・天竺まで輸出されたり、江戸時代には津軽玉と称されてかんざしなどの装飾品として珍重されてきた。
現在では鑑賞用の美石のほか、指輪、ネックレスなどの装飾具としても広く活用されている。



“Nishiki” Stone Products - made from Tsugaru stone, polished to a beautiful shiny luster

Aomori is famous for its "Mutsu Nishiki Stone". Depending on which metal ions are mixed in with members of the quartz family like red jasper, agate, and chalcedony, a complex blend of colors may emerge. Nishiki stone is a natural stone mined from the Tsugaru Peninsula area, and when polished, a shiny luster and beautiful coloring and patterns emerge.
Since ancient times, nishiki stone has been loved for its beauty. In the Jomon period (ca. 10000-300 BCE) they were used to make 'magatama'; paisley shaped ornamental beads. In the Muromachi period (1333-1573), they were prized as 'shari-ishi' (buddha stones) and exported to regions as far as Kara (present day China) and Tenjiku (present day India). In the Edo period (1603-1867), they were called 'tsugaru-dama' and used for ornaments such as ‘kanzashi’ (decorative hairpins).
Currently, “Nishiki” Stone is used to make rings, necklaces and other accessories, as well as being appreciated for its beauty.
