Forests occupy 66% of the prefecture land. One of the forests, Shirakami Mountain, holds historical values while others function largely for the public welfare. They are used for recreation, preservation of natural resources, and, for construction. Many characteristic trees are distributed throughout the region, so visitors can view them while enjoying a wide range of activities during all four seasons including mountain climbing and snowshoeing.

Broad-leaved arborvitae (Hiba) has been cited as one of the Japan’s three most beautiful forests. They comprise more than 80% of total national Growing stock.
In the Shirakami Mountains, a World Heritage site, and Hakkouda Mountains, you can have a splendid view of beech tree forests (Buna).
Japanese cedar trees have been planted in 200,554ha all over Aomori to produce timbers for construction. They form the fourth biggest artificial forests in Japan.
