Symbols of Aomori
Prefectural Flag (Prefectural Emblem)
This is a stylized rendering of the prefecture's shape.
The white background represents the boundless horizons of the prefecture, and the deep green color represents the future of the prefecture, and the hope for continued development.(adopted in 1961)
Prefectural Flower: Apple Blossom
Aomori boasts the highest production of apples in Japan. The apple blossoms bloom from early to middle May. The people of the prefecture have a special attachment to this beautiful white flower. (Adopted in 1971)
Prefectural Bird: Swan
The swan, which can be seen in many different places throughout the prefecture, is beloved by the people of Aomori as a harbinger of winter. (adopted in 1964)
Prefectural Tree: Hiba
The Hiba tree (Thujopsis dolabrata var. hondai), can withstand strong winds and heavy snowfall, and is also known as the "hinoki-asunaro." (Adopted in 1966)
Prefectural Fish: Flounder
The flounder is a symbol of Aomori's aquaculture industry. (adopted in 1987)
