At approximately 2:46 pm on March 11, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake measuring up to 7 on the Japan Meteorological Agency seismic intensity scale occurred off the Sanriku Coast near Miyagi Prefecture. The earthquake was measured strongest in Aomori Prefecture in the municipalities of Hachinohe City, Tohoku Town, Gonohe Town, Hashikami Town, and Oirase Town at a strength of 5-upper on the Japan Meteorological Agency seismic intensity scale, and the earthquake was also confirmed at all areas of Aomori Prefecture. Currently, aftershocks are still occurring so please exercise adequate caution.
