Introduction to Aomori

Position

Aomori Prefecture is located at 40°12'N.-41°33'N latitude and 139°30'E-141°41'E longitude(The same latitude as New York and Rome). It is the northernmost prefecture on the Japanese mainland of honshu.

Area

Aomori has an area of 9,607.04km² and is the eighth largest prefecture in Japan (as of October 1,2006).

Principal cities

Aomori City is the prefectural capital of Aomori Prefecture and has a population of 311,492(as of Oct.1,2005).Governmental administrative organs and branch offices of major corporations are also based in Aomori City.
Hachinohe City has prospered as a result of its import and export of various industrial products. Its aquaculture industry is also flourishing, being one of the more successful fishing areas in Japan.
Hirosaki City is a castle town where the Tsugaru feudal clan was originally based. Many historical structures, such as Hirosaki Castle, still remain here today.

Aomori Prefecture has a population of 1,436,628 people, the 28th largest prefecture in Japan(as of Oct.1,2005).
